d- i think that we'll all be fine regardless! We have all trained a little differently, so I think we'll all even each other out quite well. I still haven't been on skates and don't know that I will be on them more than once before the race. Have you tried blister blocker from Band-Aid on those spots? Or some people use cosmetic pads on the spots that rub.
I know, not too much longer to go! We are so excited for it. My legs been o.k. I've been running quite a bit after finding out what has been wrong with it and my back, so I'm hoping that it will be fine for the skating. I'm sure you are more than ready for it, since you've been training at the actual venue....I, on the other hand, have NO clue what to expect! I can't wait. are you still liking your skates?
D- glad that tony gave you the rundown on the brake thing! and SO glad that you love the skates....aren't they super comfortable? Not too much longer til the marathon, i'm so excited, and hoping that i'll be o.k. to do it. i've been training for a running marathon and just hurt my leg last week. i'm taking it easy this week and getting an MRI.
I'm just so excited for MN. If only for Fogo de chao!
Hey D,
I read your question to monkey (Cherie). Taking the break off your skates. . .great idea! To stop with out it, you need to find out witch is your less dominate foot/leg (or which leg you're comfortable with) and drag it behind you.
Basically you need to put the foot you are dragging behind perpendicular to the direction you are going (90 degrees from your other foot) and use it to slow you down. "T stop"
It will not be fast like a hockey stop, but it will slow you down enough while still maintaining control. Im sure there's some videos on you tube that illustrate it.
Hope this helps. Happy to hear you like the skates.
well, we're officially signed up for Rollerdome! so excited. we may only be able to come friday night through sunday night. Saturday night, we are going to go to Fogo De Chao with whoever is skating...please come with us!
I really have had no complaint with my marathon carbons. actually, my only complaint is that they are SO great, it's hard for me to move to my customs. :)
Mine accomodate 100mm wheels, so that has been great too. It has really made a difference, i think and I think it's a good transition between a starter skate and a custom. the wheels that come on there are o.k., but if you go on a harder wheel, you will get more of a power transfer as well.
We are coming to do the rollerdome marathon on the 28th of March. Do you want to try to do that one?
I started out with some K2 skates and I'm glad I did. Comfort-wise, they are awesome. The ones that I had were more of a tennis shoe feel to them, which was nice. But, i moved out of them quite quickly...which is the one downfall with them. I moved out of them, mainly because i wanted bigger wheels. The bigger wheels make you push harder, but when you get to the speed you want, it's easier to hold that speed.
I moved next to some rollerblades. They are what i've been in now for some time. I would recommend something with 100mm wheels. I am in the women's marathon carbon skate. They have more ankle support.
if you want something with less ankle support, they make them that are lower and are more "speed" skates. If you are planning on doing more marathons and getting into speed skating, you may want to think about doing a custom skate. I have some, but have not "evolved" into them yet. Our friend, Dave, is doing some castings right now, and I think that they are going to be a bit cheaper than what Bont or something like that is charging.
What skates are you in right now? That will help me out in what I could recommend better!
Diana, i think that we'd partner up just fine with the way that you skate now! yes, i'm pretty sure we're going to be at the rollerdome marathon...hopefully, i'll be trained enough to skate the guys by then, but i'm not sure. if not, i'm a good cheerleader! we haven't been skating a whole lot at all...i've been dragging tony to some running races with me. we're doing the 4-mile turkey trot this morning in fort collins! Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
