I was speaking with a very close friend of mine earlier about food choices. He's having a hard time avoiding refined sugar, it's an ongoing battle. He started, almost on auto-pilot, talking about being tired and hungry (two of the usual suspects in the infamous H.A.L.T. line-up) and using that as his excuse for making a poor decision to eat something he knew he was going to regret later. Regret it because he physically feels not well after eating, well, crap food. It depresses him, bogs him down…

It's flat, it's smooth, and there's no wind. . .should be easy right? I found this marathon to be a true test of what you can do when there's nothing to aid and/or hinder you.
It starts off like this: You're waiting in a stairwell with other eager and nervous skaters, gradually making your way to the second level where you tell them you bib number and roll out of the shoot one at a time. At first everything is a blur, locked up snack stands, trash cans, the numbers marking the seating sections,…

Here we are, a week from our last session at the rink. I did pretty well today despite over-doing things yesterday. I really need to learn to rest on Saturdays if I want to be in top shape Sunday morning. I'm not complaining, cause I really didn't "feel it" going into today's session, but I held my own nonetheless. Not as strong as I was last week, just because there wasn't much left after burn pace. But having just typed that, it occurs to me that because of last week's session I was probably s…

This winter hasn't been dragging like it usually does. That’s because my son Paul and I have been training indoors. I'll be the first to admit, if Paul wasn't into it, I probably would have dropped from the pack back in December. But I'm really happy I've stuck with it.
I've been feeling pretty good about the technique tips I've been picking up, but honestly, indoor speed skating is a completely different sport than outdoor long distance marathon skating. I’m at home on the trail, alone. Being…

A New Year is upon us...well, just about. Thought it was time to start blogging again. And when it comes to skating, what else is there to blog about other than how you're training. So...
I've moved indoors for the winter. I'm going to start writing about it. But I want it to be interesting, so my wife has suggested a few blogging sites for me to visit before I start in earnest.
More to come...
Feel free to share!

hi all, just wanted to give you a head's up. November 1st is the Heart Center of the Rockies race and i saw that it goes around part of Boyd. didn't know what your plans were, but thought you may want to avoid that trail that day if you didn't want to run into runners. if you did want to run into runners, go at it!

It's been a great skate weather week! John, Chad and I have been skating more in Loveland this week. John & I did 21 this morning from the Wilson Trail Head out to the end of Boyd Lake and back. Schneid and I did 10 at lunch at the lake. Great day. Sounds like we're all feeling really good about this past season, even Schneid, who had a great season despite "the race we shall not mention." Would nice to get everyone together for a few more Windsor - Greely skates before the end of the year.…

What does bonking feel like for you? I bonked this morning at around mile 24.75 of a 30 mile skate. Just felt like the stiffest headwind in the world, but there was no wind. Went from skating a 3:30 mile or better to about 5:30 for about a mile. Just wanted to skate under a rock. Then it faded. Left as fast as it came on. Has this ever happened to you?

Would have had another CO PBR on the Loveland Rec. Trail today had it not been for heavy traffic and having to T-Stop 3 times. Missed the record by 35 seconds coming in at 1:31:10. It will be nice when the clocks roll back and I can get out earlier on the trail. There are just too many people with Dogs out there after 7:30. It's nice to be wrapping it up by then.
I'll be a happy camper if I can break 1:30:36 in CO before winter comes...tomorrow is another day.

To me, “On your left” means stay to the right, to most folks it simply means continue taking up as much of the trail as they can.
Dogs like chasing skaters just as much as chasing postal workers and mechanical rabbits.
Horses don’t care too much for skaters, and to be perfectly honest, I don’t really care for horses (or their riders for that matter).
Cyclists REALLY don’t like to be passed by skaters.
Sticks and stones may break your bones out on the trail.
Dog pooh and road apples are bad…

I saw the Pulmonary Specialist yesterday and I have been cleared to start training and racing. I'm excited! Obviously I'll have to start slowly but at least I'm on the road back. I know all of you have been training long and hard, but if you know anyone who might be in the 1:50:00 range for Duluth please keep me in mind. Also please realize that time is only a guess, it could be better and it certainly could be worse.

No, I don't have the blues. I was just listening to the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies. If you know them you know the reference.

Did 10 miles with The Schneid yesterday morning out at Boyd Lake. Lost roll in the last 2 miles and started to think I've finally trashed my bearings. However, did 10 this morning and I was rolling just fine. A little louder than usual (they call me "Squeeky Wheels") but rolling a 3:39 avg. for 10.9 so not too shabby. Went out in my Aero 10's at lunch…
